Where it came from
Hero's Downfall was originally introduced in the Theros set in 2013, designed as a powerful piece of black removal that could target both creatures and planeswalkers. The version found in the Fate Reforged Clash Pack was released in 2015 as part of a preconstructed product intended to help players transition from casual play into competitive Standard formats. By reprinting this high-utility card in a fixed-content pack, Wizards of the Coast provided players with a reliable, thematic tool to handle the game's most threatening permanent types.
The card features artwork by Johannes Voss, whose contribution captures the dramatic narrative of a champion's defeat. Voss sought to emphasize the gravity of a fallen hero, using dynamic lighting and stark composition to convey the emotional weight of the scene. The card was received positively by the player base for its versatility and remains a staple in various constructed formats, serving as a landmark example of efficient black removal in the modern era of the game.
