Hexplate Golem

Hexplate Golem was released in 2016 as part of the Magic: The Gathering expansion set Conspiracy: Take the Crown. This set was designed specifically for multiplayer draft formats, emphasizing political maneuvering and social play rather than traditional competitive tournament structures. The Golem was created as a common-rarity artifact creature, serving as a functional 'vanilla' body intended to provide a reliable, high-toughness defensive presence during the chaotic, multi-player dynamics inherent to the Conspiracy play experience.

The card features artwork by illustration veteran Donato Giancola, who has contributed extensively to the game since the 1990s. In designing the visual identity for this construct, Giancola leaned into a rugged, modular aesthetic that matches the card’s name. The illustration emphasizes heavy, overlapping plates of armor and an imposing, faceless silhouette, successfully conveying the sense of a mindless, enduring sentinel meant to withstand the aggressive tactics typically encouraged by the set's unique draft mechanics.
