Hidden Horror

Hidden Horror was released in 1997 as part of the Weatherlight set, the final expansion of the Mirage block in the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. Developed during a period when Wizards of the Coast was deepening the game's central narrative, the set focused on the crew of the skyship Weatherlight. The card reflects the grim, high-fantasy aesthetic prevalent in 1990s card design, functioning as a creature that forces the player to discard cards to sustain its power, embodying the mechanical theme of sacrifice common in black-aligned cards.

The artwork was provided by fantasy illustrator Kev Walker, whose work is synonymous with the visceral, dark aesthetic of Magic during the late 1990s. Walker’s depiction captures a grotesque, shadowy entity consistent with the horror-themed creature types of the era. Upon its release, the card was received as a functional, if niche, aggressive tool for deck builders who utilized graveyard-based mechanics, and it remains a representative example of the darker visual direction taken by the design team during the Weatherlight saga.
