Provenance

Where it came from

High Ground was originally introduced in the Tempest expansion in 1997, designed as an enchantment that allows creatures to block multiple attackers. The Tenth Edition printing, released in 2007, marked a return for the card as part of a core set intended to provide a stable, evergreen foundation for the Magic: The Gathering card game. This version maintained the original mechanical identity while updating the presentation to reflect the contemporary visual standards of the era.

The illustration for the Tenth Edition printing was created by artist Heather Hudson. Hudson, a long-time contributor to the game, aimed to convey a sense of tactical advantage and defensive strength through the depiction of a fortified position. The card’s design reflects the strategic emphasis of white-aligned cards, which often prioritize battlefield control and defensive maneuvers to shift the tempo of a game in the player’s favor.
