Where it came from
High Tide was released in 1994 as part of the Fallen Empires expansion for Magic: The Gathering. This set explored the theme of an ecologically collapsing world where various factions, including the Merfolk of Sarpadia, fought for dwindling resources. As an instant, the card represented the sudden surge of power granted by the tide, allowing blue-aligned players to double the mana produced by their Islands for a single turn.
The artwork was commissioned from Drew Tucker, a prominent illustrator during the early years of the game known for his watercolor-washed, atmospheric style. Tucker's illustration for High Tide captures the moody, elemental essence of a rising ocean, moving away from the more literal depictions seen in later sets.
