Provenance

Where it came from

Hold the Gates was released in 2013 as part of the Gatecrash expansion for Magic: The Gathering. As a common enchantment card, it serves to mechanically support the Boros Legion, one of the ten guilds of Ravnica, by providing defensive utility for creatures that share the gate land type. The card represents the strategic fortification of the city-plane's entrances during the escalating conflict depicted in the Return to Ravnica block.

The artwork was illustrated by Dave Kendall, whose distinct, dark, and gritty style was a staple for many cards during this era of the game. Kendall aimed to capture the imposing nature of Ravnica’s architecture and the weight of the military defense theme. Upon its release, the card was viewed primarily as a functional piece for Limited play formats, particularly for players building draft decks focused on the gate-related synergies prevalent in the set.
