Hollow Trees

Hollow Trees was first introduced in the Homelands expansion in 1995, later appearing in the Fifth Edition core set in 1997. It was designed during a period when Wizards of the Coast was experimenting with 'storage lands'—specialized cards that allowed players to accumulate counters over several turns to generate mana boosts. The card was intended to provide a slow-rolling advantage, reflecting the set's thematic emphasis on flavor and world-building over raw competitive speed.

The card was illustrated by Quinton Hoover, a prolific artist known for his distinct, lyrical style that defined the aesthetic of early Magic: The Gathering. Despite his celebrated contribution to the game's identity, the design of Hollow Trees was met with mixed reactions from the player base. It was widely criticized for being mechanically inefficient compared to other land cards, eventually becoming a quintessential example of the experimental, sometimes frustrating, card design philosophy prevalent in the mid-1990s.
