Where it came from
Homicide Investigator was released as part of the 2024 Magic: The Gathering set Murders at Karlov Manor. The card was designed to reflect the set's top-down noir-inspired theme, centering on Ravnica’s detective agencies as they solve a series of high-profile crimes. Mechanically, the card was crafted to reward players for investigating, a signature keyword mechanic introduced in this set to evoke the tropes of hard-boiled mystery fiction.
The card’s illustration was created by artist Livia Prima, who has contributed extensively to the visual identity of modern Magic sets. Her work on this piece captures the gritty, rain-slicked atmosphere of the plane of Ravnica, emphasizing the focused, analytical nature of a professional investigator. Upon its release, the card was noted by players for its efficient utility in white-aligned creature decks, becoming a staple in various formats where resource management and card advantage are prioritized.
