Lore

Why it matters

As a common token from the Ultimate Masters series, the Homunculus serves as a functional piece that brings an artificial creature to life on the table. It is a quintessential example of the ephemeral units players use to track board states, turning a simple card into a tangible extension of a master's magical repertoire.

Provenance

Where it came from

The Homunculus token was released as part of the Ultimate Masters set in 2018, a compilation product designed to celebrate the history of Magic: The Gathering by featuring high-value reprints and iconic art styles. These tokens were included in booster packs to serve as utility pieces for gameplay, specifically intended to represent the creature generated by spells that create Homunculus creature tokens.

The illustration for this particular token was created by Greg Staples, a long-time contributor to the game. Staples utilized his signature textured, atmospheric style to capture the essence of a constructed, mystical creature. The token was well-received by the community for its thematic depth and artistic quality, standing out as a notable inclusion within the broader set of Ultimate Masters tokens.
