Honden of Night's Reach

Honden of Night's Reach was released in 2004 as part of the Champions of Kamigawa expansion, a set heavily inspired by Japanese mythology and folklore. The card belongs to a cycle of five 'Honden' shrines, designed by the Wizards of the Coast development team to encourage players to build decks around legendary enchantment permanents. The card's ability, which forces an opponent to discard a card at the beginning of the player's upkeep, was crafted to provide incremental attrition, rewarding those who managed to assemble multiple shrines on the battlefield simultaneously.

The evocative illustration was created by artist Christopher Rush, a legendary figure in the history of Magic: The Gathering whose work defined much of the game's early aesthetic.
