Where it came from
Honor Troll was released in 2021 as part of the Strixhaven: School of Mages set for Magic: The Gathering. The card was designed to fit into the Gnarled Professor aesthetic of the Witherbloom College, which emphasizes the intersection of life and death through biology and nature. Its mechanics reflect this by rewarding players for keeping creatures in play and utilizing the graveyard as a resource.
The artwork was illustrated by Svetlin Velinov, a veteran artist for the game known for his expressive creature designs. Velinov aimed to balance the menacing nature of a troll with the scholarly, botanical themes unique to the Strixhaven plane. Upon release, the card was received as a solid utility creature, valued by players for its ability to provide consistent life gain and graveyard recursion in green-black commander decks.
