Provenance

Where it came from

The Horizon Drake was released in 2010 as part of the Worldwake expansion for Magic: The Gathering. Set in the mountainous, dangerous plane of Zendikar, the expansion focused on themes of exploration and the awakening of ancient, world-shaping entities known as Eldrazi. The Drake was designed as a common-rarity creature to fill out the set's limited environment, providing players with an efficient, evasive flying threat that reflected the volatile and adventurous spirit of the plane.

The card features artwork by the illustrator Cyril Van Der Haegen, who captured the creature mid-flight against a backdrop of the jagged, floating landscapes characteristic of Zendikar. The design intent was to emphasize the verticality and magical instability of the setting, with the Drake serving as a prime example of the strange, agile fauna that populated this high-adventure environment. Upon release, it was well-received by players of the Limited formats for its utility and contribution to the set's immersive world-building.
