Where it came from
Hostage Taker was originally introduced in the 2017 set Ixalan, designed as a rare creature that embodied the piratical flavor of that expansion. The card functions as a tactical removal tool, allowing players to exile an opponent's creature or artifact and eventually cast it for themselves. Its mechanics were intentionally built to reward strategic timing and resource management, leaning into the 'thieving' archetype central to the set's seafaring aesthetic.
The Double Masters 2022 version, numbered 505, features updated borderless art by artist Grzegorz Rutkowski. This reprint was curated for a set focused on high-powered cards and sought-after reprints, with the artistic direction emphasizing a more dramatic, polished aesthetic consistent with the premium nature of the Masters series. The card has been well-regarded by the Magic: The Gathering community for both its versatility in gameplay and the evocative, illustrative quality of its updated visual treatment.
