Where it came from
Hungry Hungry Heifer was released in 1998 as part of Unglued, the first dedicated parody expansion for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. Created by Wizards of the Coast, this set was designed to explore humor and meta-commentary within the game's mechanics, deliberately breaking traditional rules to provide a lighthearted experience for players who had become accustomed to the increasingly complex tournament environment.
The card was illustrated by Quinton Hoover, a prolific artist known for his distinctive, expressive style that frequently appeared throughout the early years of the game. Designed as a whimsical play on the children’s board game Hungry Hungry Hippos, the card utilizes a simple, repetitive activation cost to mimic the frantic energy of the board game's theme, serving as a memorable example of the creative freedom the developers exercised during the development of their inaugural joke set.
