Provenance

Where it came from

Hungry Spriggan was released in 2008 as part of the Shadowmoor expansion for Magic: The Gathering. The set introduced a shift toward hybrid mana costs and darker, folklore-inspired themes centered on a world trapped in an eternal twilight. The card mechanic, which grants the creature temporary power based on the presence of hybrid mana, reflects the set's focus on the fluidity between colors and the predatory nature of the woodland spirits populating the plane of Lorwyn-Shadowmoor.

The illustration was crafted by artist Christopher Moeller, who captured the grotesque, twisted aesthetic characteristic of the Shadowmoor setting. Moeller, a long-time contributor to the game, aimed to depict the Spriggan as a formidable, forest-dwelling creature that embodies both plant and beast. Upon release, the card was recognized for its utility in limited formats and its contribution to the aggressive green strategies that defined that era of play.
