Provenance

Where it came from

Hunting Drake was released in February 2001 as part of the Planeshift expansion for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. Developed by Wizards of the Coast, this set focused on the conflict between the phyrexian-invaded world of Dominaria and the forces of the coalition, serving as the second installment of the Invasion block. The card reflects the set's emphasis on high-cost, high-impact creatures designed to emphasize the dramatic scale of the ongoing planar war.

The artwork for Hunting Drake was illustrated by Greg Staples, who contributed to various Magic sets throughout the late 1990s and early 2000s. Staples employed a textured, atmospheric style that sought to capture the predator's aggressive stance and mystical properties, consistent with the blue mana color identity of the time. Upon release, the card was received as a functional utility piece in limited formats, valued for its ability to manipulate the board state by returning creatures to an opponent's hand.
