Where it came from
Hypnotic Grifter was released in 2022 as part of the Streets of New Capenna expansion for Magic: The Gathering. The set draws heavy inspiration from 1920s Art Deco and film noir aesthetics, centered on a city controlled by five warring crime families. This particular card represents the card-manipulation mechanics associated with the blue-aligned Obscura family, who specialize in surveillance and deception.
The card was illustrated by Wisnu Tan, who captured the fluid, magical essence of the character amidst the opulent, geometric architecture of New Capenna. Design-wise, the card was intended to provide players with a repeatable looting effect, allowing them to filter through their deck. It was received as a functional, low-cost utility creature that fits well into synergy-based strategies, particularly those focusing on graveyard recursion or hand quality control.
