Icatian Store

Icatian Store was released in November 1994 as part of the Fallen Empires expansion set for Magic: The Gathering. The set was designed to explore a world embroiled in a perpetual, resource-depleted civil war, and the card's mechanics reflect this flavor by allowing players to sacrifice citizens to generate the mana necessary to sustain a war effort. This thematic focus on sacrifice and societal collapse was a distinct shift from the high-fantasy tropes of the game’s earlier sets.

The card’s illustration was created by artist Anson Maddocks, who was one of the original illustrators for the game. His design utilizes a stark, gothic style that emphasizes the gritty, desperate atmosphere of the Icatian nation. At the time of release, Fallen Empires was criticized by players for its perceived lack of raw power compared to previous sets, though in later years, it became appreciated for its cohesive narrative world-building and the specific niche utility its cards provided to casual and thematic deck builders.
