Icy Manipulator

Icy Manipulator was originally released as part of the Alpha set in 1993, designed by Richard Garfield for the inaugural Magic: The Gathering card game. The oversized promo version, designated as number 6 in the Oversized League Prizes series, was created during the mid-to-late 1990s as a promotional incentive for players participating in organized play leagues. These oversized cards were scaled up significantly from the standard 2.5 by 3.5-inch playing size, intended primarily as displays or trophies for dedicated tournament participants rather than for use in competitive play.

The iconic illustration for the card was provided by Amy Weber, one of the original artists for the game. Her work on this piece captures the artifact's mechanical, freezing nature, grounding it in the dark fantasy aesthetic that defined the game's early visual language. While the card is mechanically identical to its standard-sized counterpart, which is famously known for its powerful utility in tapping and locking down opponent permanents, the oversized league prize release is valued today as a niche collectible that represents the era when organized play first began to formalize its rewards structure.
