Where it came from
Ill-Tempered Loner // Howlpack Avenger was introduced in the 2022 set Innistrad: Double Feature, a specialized release designed to celebrate the gothic horror themes of the block. The set utilized a unique silver-screen monochromatic art style, applying a desaturated, high-contrast aesthetic to cards originally featured in the Innistrad: Midnight Hunt and Innistrad: Crimson Vow expansions. This specific double-faced card captures the werewolf transformation mechanic central to the Innistrad setting.
The card was illustrated by Wisnu Tan, who rendered the Loner’s transformation into the Avenger with a gritty, dramatic flair suited to the horror-centric narrative of the plane. Within the gameplay context of the Innistrad sets, the card functions as a reactive threat, rewarding players for absorbing damage and redirecting it back at opponents. The Double Feature treatment was received by the community as a stylistic experiment, aimed at collectors who appreciated the cinematic, black-and-white visual homage to classic monster films.
