Where it came from
The Illithid Harvester // Plant Tadpoles card was released as a promotional item for Magic: The Gathering's 'Commander Legends: Battle for Baldur's Gate' set, which launched in 2022. Designed to integrate the iconic lore of Dungeons & Dragons into the card game's mechanics, the card features the double-faced 'transform' mechanic to represent the biological lifecycle of the Mind Flayer, a classic antagonist in tabletop role-playing games.
The illustration was crafted to evoke the eerie, subterranean horror synonymous with Illithid society. By depicting the transformation from a parasitic tadpole to an elder brain-servant, the designers aimed to provide players with a thematic experience that mirrored the psychological dread found in Baldur's Gate campaign modules. It was generally well-received by the player base for successfully blending mechanical utility with the specific aesthetic of the Forgotten Realms setting.
