Where it came from
Illusory Angel was released in 2014 as part of the Magic 2015 core set for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. Designed for a competitive environment that incentivized low-cost spell casting, the card introduced a mechanic that allowed players to summon a powerful flying creature at a reduced cost if they had previously cast another spell during the same turn.
The card features artwork by Cynthia Sheppard, who was tasked with visualizing a creature that felt both ethereal and threatening. Her illustration utilizes a high-contrast palette and fluid lines to emphasize the angel's illusory nature, aiming to blend the traditional aesthetic of angelic beings in fantasy art with the shifting, unstable visual language of an illusion spell.
