Where it came from
Indrik Umbra was released in 2012 as part of the Planechase expansion, a format designed to introduce multiversal travel to the Magic: The Gathering card game. The card belongs to the enchantment aura subtype, specifically the Totem Armor mechanic which was first introduced in the Rise of the Eldrazi set. This mechanic was created to provide a layer of protection for enchanted creatures, allowing the aura to be destroyed instead of the creature itself when faced with lethal damage.
The artwork for Indrik Umbra was illustrated by Kev Walker, a prominent artist known for his dark and visceral style within the game. Walker’s depiction focuses on the ethereal, imposing nature of the Indrik spirit, aiming to capture the essence of a massive, otherworldly beast imbued with the strength of the Umbra. The card was received by the player base as a versatile tool for Voltron-style decks, where players aim to buff a single creature to victory, thanks to its combination of power, toughness, and defensive utility.
