Where it came from
Infectious Inquiry was released in early 2023 as part of the Magic: The Gathering set Phyrexia: All Will Be One. The card is set within the plane of New Phyrexia, reflecting the body-horror aesthetic and mechanical focus on the 'poison' and 'proliferate' mechanics that define the Phyrexians. Its design reflects the narrative arc of the set, where the artificial, biomechanical horrors of the Phyrexians seek to complete their vision of perfection by corrupting the multiverse.
The illustration for the card was provided by artist Campbell White. It depicts the clinical and cold nature of Phyrexian experimentation, emphasizing the themes of unnatural growth and the slow, systematic replacement of biological matter with metal and oil. Upon its release, the card was received as a functional staple for decks utilizing poison counters, recognized for its efficiency in drawing cards while advancing the game's infection-based win condition.
