Where it came from
Inkwell Leviathan was originally released in the 2009 set Conflux before being reprinted in the 2016 compilation set Eternal Masters. Designed for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game, the card reflects the aesthetic of the Shard of Grixis, a plane defined by decay, malice, and massive, mutated oceanic threats. It was intended to function as a powerful late-game finisher, utilizing mechanics like shroud and islandwalk to make it exceptionally difficult for opponents to remove from the battlefield.
The illustration was created by artist Jaime Jones, who sought to capture the immense scale and unsettling, biomechanical nature of the creature. Jones leaned into the dark, visceral imagery characteristic of the Grixis theme, emphasizing the creature's massive size and its integration of organic and artificial elements. Upon its debut, the card was well-received by players for its imposing presence and its utility in control-oriented strategies, cementing its status as a quintessential powerhouse in the game's expansive history.
