Innocent Blood

Innocent Blood was released in the 2001 Odyssey expansion for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. Developed by Wizards of the Coast, the set was designed to shift the game's mechanics back toward graveyard interaction and creatures, moving away from the enchantment-heavy focus of the preceding block. As a common sorcery, the card was designed as an efficient removal tool, forcing both players to sacrifice a creature to reflect the theme of mutual loss inherent to the set's graveyard-focused mechanics.

The card’s striking visual identity was crafted by illustrator Carl Critchlow, whose work is characterized by a distinctive, textured approach to fantasy art. Critchlow sought to capture the grim, sacrificial essence of the spell, utilizing stark compositions that emphasized the high cost of the card's effect.
