Insidious Bookworms

Insidious Bookworms was released in 2006 as part of the Coldsnap expansion for Magic: The Gathering. As the final set in the Ice Age block, Coldsnap was designed with a thematic focus on a harsh, eternal winter, following the narrative established by the previous sets in the 1990s. The card was specifically included in the 'Reapings' theme deck, which leveraged the set's mechanics surrounding graveyard interaction and sacrificing permanents to gain tactical advantages.

The card was illustrated by Greg Simanson, whose work on the piece reflects the dark, atmospheric tone of the Coldsnap set. Simanson leaned into the creature's morbid theme, depicting a grotesque, insectoid entity emerging from the pages of a tome.
