Into the Roil

Into the Roil is a functional reprint of a card originally debuted in the 2009 Zendikar set, appearing here as part of the 2020 Zendikar Rising release. The card captures the chaotic, shifting landscape of the plane of Zendikar, where the environment itself reacts with volatile magical energy. Mechanically, it serves as a flexible utility spell, allowing players to return a nonland permanent to its owner's hand while providing the option to draw a card if the spell is cast using its kicker cost.

The illustration for this iteration was created by artist Igor Kieryluk, who focused on the turbulent, elemental essence of the Roil. His design emphasizes the swirling winds and debris characteristic of Zendikar’s geography, visually grounding the spell's effect of 'bouncing' an object by showing the physical disruption of the terrain. Upon its release, the card was well-received by players for its versatility, maintaining its status as a staple for deck building in formats where tempo and resource management are critical.
