Into the Roil

Into the Roil was first introduced in the Worldwake expansion of 2010 and later reprinted as part of the Zendikar Rising set in 2020. It was designed as a versatile blue instant, functioning as a staple utility spell that allows players to return a nonland permanent to its owner's hand, with an optional kicker cost that enables card draw. The card was crafted to capture the chaotic, shifting landscape of the Zendikar plane, where the environment itself is a dangerous, unpredictable force.

The Zendikar Rising iteration features artwork by Campbell White, who leaned into the dramatic, elemental nature of the setting. White's depiction emphasizes the raw power of the 'Roil'—the geological turbulence iconic to the world—visualizing the magical displacement of objects within a swirling landscape.
