Where it came from
Inverter of Truth was released in early 2016 as part of the Oath of the Gatewatch expansion for Magic: The Gathering. The set focused on the narrative conflict between the Zendikar plane's inhabitants and the reality-warping Eldrazi titans, with this specific card representing the corrupting, void-like influence of the antagonist Kozilek. It was designed to mechanically embody the chaotic and destructive nature of the Eldrazi by forcing a player to replace their library with their graveyard.
The artwork was created by fantasy illustrator Chase Stone, known for his dramatic lighting and textured character designs. Stone aimed to depict the creature as an unsettling, surreal entity that defies conventional geometry, reflecting its role as a breaker of physical laws. Upon its release, the card drew significant attention from the competitive community for its high-risk, high-reward ability, becoming a centerpiece for various combo-oriented deck strategies in both Modern and Legacy formats.
