Where it came from
Irascible Wolverine was released in 2024 as part of the Magic: The Gathering expansion set Outlaws of Thunder Junction. The set is themed around a Wild West fantasy aesthetic, depicting a plane where outlaws and villains from across the multiverse congregate. This card features the mechanics of the set's 'plot' keyword, reflecting the tactical, high-stakes atmosphere of a frontier gunslinger conflict.
The card was illustrated by David Auden Nash, who employed a dynamic, action-oriented style to capture the creature's aggressive nature. The design emphasizes the character's impulsive, predatory behavior consistent with its lore within the Magic: The Gathering universe. Upon release, it was well-received by players for its efficiency and synergy within red-aligned aggressive decks, becoming a frequent inclusion in competitive formats during its tenure in the Standard rotation.
