Where it came from
The Iron Star was released as part of the Seventh Edition core set for Magic: The Gathering in 2001. As a member of the cycle of artifacts known as the 'Mirage artifacts,' it was originally introduced in the 1996 Mirage expansion and reprinted to provide a consistent tactical element for white decks. The card was designed to incentivize players to commit to a specific color strategy by offering minor life gain whenever a player cast a spell of that color.
The illustration was created by artist Brian Snoddy, whose work is characterized by a distinct, rugged aesthetic that helped define the visual language of early Magic: The Gathering. The design depicts a stylized, star-shaped mechanical relic, fitting the artifact's function as a thematic, magical support item. Within the gaming community, the card is remembered as a functional entry-level tool that exemplified the straightforward, utility-focused design philosophy of the game's core sets during the late 1990s and early 2000s.
