What it does

The mating habits of Treefolk, particularly the stalwart Ironroot Treefolk, are truly absurd. Molasses comes to mind. It's amazing the species can survive at all given such protracted periods of mate selection, conjugation, and gestation.

Provenance

Where it came from

Ironroot Treefolk was originally featured as a common card in the Alpha and Beta sets of Magic: The Gathering in 1993, designed to represent a stalwart, forest-dwelling creature within the game's initial fantasy framework. The International Collectors' Edition, released in 1993, served as a non-tournament-legal reproduction set intended for exhibition and promotional purposes, featuring gold-bordered backs and square corners to distinguish these cards from their game-playable counterparts.

The card’s illustration was crafted by artist Dameon Willich, who contributed a variety of creature designs during the game's formative period. His work on the Treefolk aimed to capture the earthy, imposing nature of arboreal entities within the lore. While the International Collectors' Edition was initially met with mixed reception by players seeking standard game pieces, the set has since become a respected artifact among collectors for its role in the game’s early history and its distinct aesthetic appeal.
