Provenance

Where it came from

Isolation Zone was originally printed in the 2016 Oath of the Gatewatch expansion for Magic: The Gathering. Set against the backdrop of the Zendikar plane, the card represents the desperate defensive measures taken by the local inhabitants to contain the encroaching influence of the Eldrazi titans. The artwork, created by Chase Stone, emphasizes the surreal and unsettling nature of the magical prisons used to lock away these planar threats.

The card was later included in 'The List', a curated selection of reprints integrated into Set Boosters starting in 2020. This initiative was designed by Wizards of the Coast to bring older, mechanically interesting cards back into active circulation, allowing players to encounter pieces of Magic's deep history within modern product packaging. Isolation Zone remains a recognizable example of white-aligned control magic, valued for its straightforward utility in exiling problematic permanents.
