Where it came from
Jabs, Mistress of Mockery was released in 2021 as part of the Mystery Booster: Commander Edition, a specialized set designed to bring the chaotic, draft-focused experience of the original Mystery Booster to the Commander format. The card belongs to the 'Playtest' sub-series, which features designs that were never intended for standard tournament legality. These cards were created to provide a glimpse into the internal R&D process, showcasing experimental mechanics and humorous concepts that push the boundaries of traditional game design.
The card was illustrated by Victor Adame Minguez, whose work is characterized by vibrant, expressive character design. In this instance, the aesthetic leans into the whimsical and provocative nature of the character, fitting the experimental ethos of the Mystery Booster series. Because these cards were produced specifically as conceptual 'playtest' artifacts, they were received by the community as unique, meta-textual collectibles rather than competitive tools, often cherished for their unconventional mechanics and self-aware, tongue-in-cheek humor.
