Provenance

Where it came from

Jack-in-the-Mox was released in 2020 as part of the Unsanctioned boxed set, a standalone experience designed by Wizards of the Coast to bring the lighthearted, rule-breaking spirit of the silver-bordered Un-sets to a broader audience. As a parody card, it plays on the legendary status and extreme power level of the original Mox artifacts from Magic: The Gathering’s early history, specifically the Mox Emerald, Pearl, Jet, Ruby, and Sapphire.

The card was illustrated by Christopher Rush, who notably provided the original art for the iconic Black Lotus and the core set of Moxen. The design intentionally evokes the nostalgic aesthetic of the 1993 Alpha set while introducing a chaotic, randomized mana-producing mechanic fitting for the silver-bordered environment. It is widely viewed by players as a whimsical homage to the game's origins rather than a competitive tool.
