Provenance

Where it came from

The Jagged Poppet was released in 2006 as part of the Dissension expansion, the final set in the Ravnica: City of Guilds block for Magic: The Gathering. Set on the plane of Ravnica, this card represents the Gruul Clans, a faction defined by their anarchic, destructive nature and their desire to return the cityscape to a wild state. Mechanically, the card reflects the Gruul playstyle of the era, which prioritized aggressive, high-risk resource exchanges.

The artwork was created by illustrator Pete Venters, a prolific artist known for his long-standing contributions to the game during its early and middle years. Venters designed the creature as a chaotic, cobbled-together construct of scrap metal and organic waste, embodying the utilitarian and brutal aesthetic of the guild. Upon release, the card was viewed primarily as a limited-format utility piece, favored by players looking to weaponize their mana pool to finish off opponents in aggressive deck archetypes.
