Provenance

Where it came from

Pride of the Clouds was released in 2006 as part of the Dissension expansion, the final set in the Ravnica: City of Guilds block for Magic: The Gathering. Designed by Wizards of the Coast, the card represents the Azorius Senate, one of the primary factions on the plane of Ravnica, tasked with maintaining law and order through bureaucratic governance and judicial control.

The card was illustrated by Greg Staples, who utilized a ethereal, airy aesthetic to emphasize its identity as a Spirit Elemental. The design mechanically captures the flavor of a guild-controlled cityscape by scaling its power based on the number of other flyers on the battlefield, reflecting the Azorius Senate’s ability to mobilize and command authority across the skies of the city.
