Jamming Device

Jamming Device was released in 2017 as part of the Unstable expansion, the third silver-bordered set produced by Wizards of the Coast for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. Designed primarily by Mark Rosewater, the set was intended to push the boundaries of game mechanics by focusing on humor, experimental card types, and unconventional rules that could not exist in standard competitive play.

The card’s illustration was created by artist David Rapoza, who captured the chaotic, clunky aesthetic of the contraption. As a member of the artifact-heavy subtheme of the set, the card functions by manipulating the game's unconventional 'Contraption' deck mechanic. It was received by the player base as a quintessential example of Unstable’s tongue-in-cheek design philosophy, prioritizing thematic whimsy over strict mechanical balance.
