Where it came from
The Jeong Jeong's Deserters card, numbered 25 in the Avatar: The Last Airbender trading card series, was produced to commemorate the pivotal character arc of the firebending master who abandoned the Fire Nation military. Introduced during the show's first season, the card captures the thematic contrast between the disciplined, destructive Fire Nation and the more balanced, philosophical approach Jeong Jeong attempted to teach Aang. The set as a whole was designed to mirror the animation style of the Nickelodeon series, utilizing high-quality frame grabs and character art that resonate with the show's distinct aesthetic.
This card was part of a broader merchandising push by Topps that aimed to satisfy a growing fanbase during the show's original broadcast run. The design focuses on the somber, reflective nature of the 'Deserters' episode, emphasizing the character's internal conflict and his rejection of the Fire Lord’s ideology. While these cards were primarily intended for younger viewers and casual collectors, they have since gained traction among fans who value the series for its narrative depth and character-focused lore.
