Jet Medallion

Jet Medallion was originally released as part of the Tempest expansion in 1997, designed to offer players a cost reduction for black spells, a mechanic intended to reward mono-colored deck strategies. The card features artwork by Christopher Rush, one of the most iconic illustrators in the game's early history, whose work helped define the dark, gothic aesthetic of early Magic: The Gathering. The medallion itself is depicted as a relic of the Rath plane, emphasizing the lore-heavy approach to card design that characterized the period.

The 2014 reprint in the Commander 2014 set brought the card to a new generation of players, coinciding with the rise of the Commander format as the primary social way to play the game. By reprinting the medallion in a preconstructed deck focused on mono-black strategies, Wizards of the Coast acknowledged its status as a cornerstone artifact for mana acceleration. While the original art remains a touchstone for collectors, the 2014 version maintains the card’s functional utility in modern casual play environments.
