Provenance

Where it came from

Jeweled Bird was released in 1994 as part of the Chronicles expansion for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. Chronicles served as a reprint set, designed to make iconic or otherwise unavailable cards from earlier, out-of-print expansions more accessible to a growing player base. Its inclusion in this set marked its return from the Arabian Nights expansion, the game's first expansion set released in 1993.

The card’s illustration was created by artist Christopher Rush, one of the most prolific early contributors to the game’s visual identity. Rush designed the card with a vibrant, intricate aesthetic that echoed the folklore themes of the Arabian Nights expansion. While the card is often discussed for its unconventional and somewhat cumbersome gameplay mechanics involving the game's ante system, it remains a notable example of the early, experimental design philosophy of the game's formative years.
