Where it came from
Jiang Yanggu, Wildcrafter (Collector Number 517) was released as part of the Secret Lair series, a line of curated, limited-run card sets designed to highlight specific artistic styles or themes within the Magic: The Gathering ecosystem. This particular iteration was created to celebrate the character Jiang Yanggu, who originated from the Global Series: Jiang Yanggu & Mu Yanling, a product line specifically designed to introduce the game to new audiences in China by incorporating regional aesthetic sensibilities and folklore elements.
The card features distinct, stylized artwork that diverges from the standard core set visual language, emphasizing the character's role as a mentor figure. The design process focused on translating the character's loyalty-based mechanics into a cohesive visual narrative. Upon release, the Secret Lair treatment was noted by collectors for its unique frame and thematic presentation, which reinforced the character's status as a distinct planeswalker within the game's expansive multicultural lore.
