Provenance

Where it came from

Journey was released in 2023 as part of the Magic: The Gathering set 'The Lord of the Rings: Tales of Middle-earth', a collaborative effort between Wizards of the Coast and Middle-earth Enterprises. This specific card belongs to the 'Front Cards' collection, which acts as a promotional display subset, showcasing the expansive art style adapted for the set. These cards were designed to bridge the gap between traditional tabletop card gaming and the literary legacy of J.R.R. Tolkien, emphasizing the epic scope of the fellowship's trek across Middle-earth.

The artwork for this series was commissioned from a variety of contemporary illustrators who sought to provide a fresh visual interpretation of Tolkien’s world, distinct from earlier film adaptations. In designing these cards, the creative team aimed for a balance between modern fantasy aesthetics and the classic, high-fantasy tone established by the original novels. Upon release, the set was widely praised by the community for its rich visual storytelling and its faithful, if modernized, representation of the iconic landscapes and characters within the legendarium.
