Where it came from
Joven and Chandler debuted in the 1996 Magic: The Gathering expansion Homelands, a set infamous for its inconsistent power level and experimental flavor. These two characters were central figures in the set's narrative, depicted as allies who assisted the planeswalker Serra. The cards were designed to reflect their roles as thematic partners, though they were rarely seen in competitive play due to the mechanical limitations of the Homelands era.
For the Mystery Booster: Commander Edition, the cards were reprinted with their original art, curated to serve as a nostalgic nod to the game's early history. Illustrators Christopher Rush and Daniel Gelon provided the original designs, aiming for a classic fantasy aesthetic that leaned heavily into the folklore-inspired tone of the set. While they remain niche collectibles, they are frequently discussed by enthusiasts as quintessential examples of the experimental design choices that defined the mid-nineties MTG landscape.
