Where it came from
Junji, the Midnight Sky, originally debuted in the Kamigawa: Neon Dynasty set before appearing as part of the Secret Lair Countdown Kit released in 2022. This specific printing was commissioned as a featured card in a limited-edition advent-style calendar, which collected various Magic: The Gathering cards with unique, stylized artwork designed to distinguish them from standard set releases.
The illustration for this iteration was created by artist Junggeun Yoon, who adopted a distinct aesthetic characterized by bold lines and a dramatic color palette. The design sought to reinterpret the card's mythological dragon archetype through a modern, atmospheric lens, emphasizing the celestial and shadowy nature of the character to resonate with collectors who value artistic variation over traditional card frame conventions.
