Kaervek the Merciless

Kaervek the Merciless was released in the 2006 Magic: The Gathering set Time Spiral. As a legendary creature, Kaervek was designed to represent a character central to the lore of the Mirage block, a ruthless sorcerer known for his manipulative and destructive influence over the continent of Jamuraa. Mechanically, the card was crafted to embody this personality, punishing opponents for every spell they cast by dealing damage equal to that spell's mana cost.

The card’s artwork was illustrated by Aleksi Briclot, who employed a dramatic, dark aesthetic to capture Kaervek’s malevolent presence. In the context of the Time Spiral set, which focused on nostalgia and revisiting influential characters from the game's past, Kaervek was well-received by players for his thematic consistency and his role as a formidable threat in the Commander format, where he remains a staple for players favoring aggressive, damage-based strategies.
