Where it came from
Kaito, Dancing Shadow was released in 2023 as part of the Magic: The Gathering set Phyrexia: All Will Be One. The card depicts Kaito Shizuki, a cybernetic ninja from the plane of Kamigawa, during the multi-planar conflict against the Phyrexians. Its design reflects Kaito's role as an infiltrator, featuring a signature ability that allows him to return creatures to their owner's hand to facilitate repeat usage of enter-the-battlefield effects.
The artwork was provided by the illustrator Daarken, known for a dark, atmospheric style that has appeared on numerous Magic cards since the mid-2000s. Daarken captured Kaito in a dynamic, shadowy stance that emphasizes his agility and technological augmentations. The card was received by players as a flexible utility planeswalker, finding a steady niche in competitive formats due to its ability to protect itself and generate card advantage through the 'ninjutsu-like' bounce mechanic.
