Where it came from
Kangee, Sky Warden was released in 2020 as part of the Commander Legends set, a unique expansion designed specifically for the Commander format of Magic: The Gathering. The card serves as a successor to the original Kangee, Aerie Keeper, reimagining the character as a high-ranking avian commander within the lore of the setting. It was crafted to provide players with a synergistic centerpiece for bird-themed decks, emphasizing the tribal mechanics that define the card type.
The artwork for this iteration was illustrated by Greg Staples, an artist well-regarded for his contributions to the game's atmospheric and fantasy aesthetics. Staples sought to capture a sense of martial authority and movement, depicting Kangee in a regal, commanding posture suited to his title as a Sky Warden. Upon release, the card was well-received by the Commander community for its cohesive design and its ability to act as a thematic leader for one of the game's more niche creature types.
