Where it came from
Karador, Ghost Chieftain was originally introduced in the 2011 Commander product line as the face of the Counterpunch deck. Designed as a synergistic commander, the card represents an Abzan-aligned spirit leader capable of manipulating the graveyard. The character's lore centers on a spectral centaur chieftain who commands the spirits of his fallen kin, a theme that guided the mechanics of allowing players to cast creature cards from their graveyards based on the number of creatures already in the graveyard.
The Commander Legends printing, featuring art by Todd Lockwood, serves as a high-quality showcase for the character. Lockwood, a celebrated fantasy illustrator known for his extensive work within the Dungeons & Dragons and Magic: The Gathering universes, leaned into the ethereal and imposing nature of the chieftain. This version was released as part of the set's effort to provide iconic and highly playable commanders with updated, distinct aesthetics for long-time fans of the format.
