Where it came from
Kari Zev's Expertise was released in 2017 as part of the Aether Revolt set for Magic: The Gathering. As a rare sorcery card, it was designed to showcase the set's 'improvise' and 'expertise' mechanics, which encouraged players to cast spells with converted mana costs of zero. The card depicts the pirate Kari Zev alongside her monkey companion, Ragavan, reflecting the vibrant, steampunk-inspired aesthetic of the Kaladesh block.
The card was illustrated by Victor Adame Minguez, who sought to capture the dynamic, swashbuckling personality of the character during a moment of high-stakes action. Upon its release, the card received attention from competitive players for its efficiency and synergy within aggressive deck archetypes, eventually becoming a staple in various formats where free-spell effects are highly valued.
